. donate today. >> shepard: they were all out shopping in seattle last night and all of a sudden chaos when an escalator went all haywire inside a macy's department store. somebody snapped this photo of the scene just moments after the steps popped loose at the top of the escalator. a closer look shows how they folded on top of each other. we are told the incident injured a number of shoppers and paramedics took at least four people to hospitals including a woman and her two young children. >> tonight was a joyful night. we have snowflake lane. i'm sure they were here for that with their kids. so it's devastating. >> investigators say testimony as be to it a mechanical failure but they tell us they are looking into how it happened. family members of this 46-year-old woman survived for a week eating nothing but tomatoes and snow. happened after a winter storm stranded her boyfriend and her during a drive through syria, nevada. she took shelter in a hollowed out tree while the boyfriend set out for help. >> she is little but she is mighty. she is is a survivor and she lost life. >> searchers
, serious snow expected there in the next several days. look at the west coast and seattle, the snow levels have been down as low as 200 feet. they will go up to 400 feet for the afternoon. some of these snowfall totals, very substantial going into the next several days. could see 10 or 20 inches of snowfall. but in the midwest, this is what we'll focus on. we haven't seen a significant snow event like this. this one occurs as we go into wednesday and then for thursday, so you're traveling into chicago or des moines or topeka, wichita and even into denver. you could expect perhaps some delays later on in the workweek. how about 48-hour snowfall totals? spokane just under 5 inches being reported there. in libby, montana, two-day snow totals just about 2 feet. and newtown, connecticut, right now overcast with rain. the temperature a cold rain. 41 degrees. the winds are out of the east and northeast but as we go into the next five days, we'll look at a little bit of a break weatherwise. those temperatures will remain in the 40s but then as we go into friday, the rain is going to return and a 2

of them died. five people killed at the seattle cafe in may. there was the aurora massacre in july. 12 people killed, 58 additional people shot who were not killed. the sikh temple pass killing in oak creek, wisconsin, in august. that was the white supremacist guy. six people were killed in that massacre. the gunman was also killed. in september, the minneapolis sign company with the disgruntled employee. five people shot and killed there the wisconsin spa shooting in october, three people dead there plus the shooter. just this week that mall in clackamas, oregon. two dead plus the shooter. that was tuesday of this week. incidents where someone with firearms kills multiple people. these incidents happen a lot in the united states. and we know that. but in ezra's piece today, we see if you put these shootings in an international context, it is even more striking. if you look internationally at the worst mass shooting incidents of the last 50 years, the worst mass shootings in a civilian context that have happened anywhere in the world over the course of the last half century, 15 of the

of the west coast, seattle, down to california. christmas leave looks more tranquil. that snow will dumping snow in portions of rockies and colorado and wyoming. we'll be accumulating snowfall and eventually this storm is going to head into the center of the country. it will be a pretty strong storm and very cold air with it. so definitely we're going to be talking about snow accumulations texas panhandle, parts of arkansas and missouri and illinois. some of these countries don't see a white christmas. so we're talking about quite a bit of snow, up to six inches locally and higher amounts, a winter storm watch has been issued across the state of oklahoma. good news for anyone that wants snow in the center of the country. christmas eve, messy day out in southeast and thunderstorms ahead of that winter storm could be firing up as severe weather. we'll keep an eye on portions of south. not just christmas eve but even christmas day, severe weather with thunderstorms that could produce some isolated tornadoes and large hail. >> gregg: it could be making it to grandma's house a little tricky. >>

seattle there are concerns about more mudslides. meteorologist karen maginnis joins us live from atlanta with the latest. they cannot get a break. >> they really can't, and for some folks, this is not coming as good news because it looks like that pineapple express, that moisture coming from deep within the pacific, that's going to be shut off, but we've still got the moisture coming in from the gulf of alaska and that's going to lower the snow levels across the cascades and the olympics down to around 2,000 feet or so. it has been hovering around 3,000 or 4,000 feet. we've got additional snowfall here but also the rain moves in. take a look at video that we have from our cnn affiliate, komo, and a house has been steadily sliding down a hill. this is in the vicinity of everette, washington, and they say that this has been going on for quite some time. so every time it rains, not just this one house, but a number of homes in this particular neighborhood, they say every time it rains it just kind of undermines the footings on the homes there and they tend to slip down even more. we've seen
